Africa doesn’t lack biotech innovation; it lacks product development pathways that turn scientific breakthroughs into scalable solutions. The disconnect between what happens in the lab and what reaches the market, remains one of the biggest barriers to unlock Africa’s bioeconomy. Across the continent, promising bioprocessing and biotech solutions remain trapped and, unable to progress into pilot-scale development or commercial adoption. The infrastructure exists in pockets, but not yet at the scale required to meet Africa’s potential. This is the gap that UVU Bio’s Product Development and Innovation Unit is designed to close.
Recently, a collaboration with diiVe, a global learning organisation that places international student consultants into real-world business challenges, provided an external, global lens on the same system-level bottlenecks UVU Bio has been observing on the ground. Their work offered fresh perspectives that reinforce and deepen the case for accelerating Africa’s product development and innovation landscape.
Six students from universities across Europe, North America, and Asia arrived in Cape Town ready to roll up their sleeves and dive into Africa’s biotechnology ecosystem. Their task was to assess the landscape in South Africa and East Africa to identify relevant trends and priorities in the biotech and bioprocessing sectors. The overall aim was to provide insights into how UVU Bio’s Product Development and Innovation Unit can deliver more targeted impact.

Their curiosity, professionalism, and genuine eagerness to contribute turned this experience into something truly meaningful and deeply rewarding,” says Dr Nodumo Zulu, UVU Bio’s Head of Product Development and Innovation Unit.
What unfolded between UVU Bio and diiVe was a powerful exchange of global minds, and the shared belief that biotechnology can change lives when it’s accessible, applied, and scaled with purpose.
Global Insight Meets Local Opportunity
The diiVe team took a deep dive into the bioprocessing and biotech markets of South Africa and Rwanda, uncovering a set of compelling insights that reflect opportunity and urgency. Their research revealed that Africa’s biotech sector holds immense promise, yet it continues to face gaps in accessible product development initiatives. Bioprocessing stands out as one of the continent’s most dynamic growth areas, with significant potential in food systems, diagnostics, energy, and agro–processing.
The “Valley of Death” is a major hurdle encountered by many innovations stuck at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4, where validation is successful only in the laboratory. Moving beyond this stage to pilot-scale development requires substantial resources, including specialised infrastructure, large-scale funding, regulatory expertise, and successful market alignment. Without these critical inputs, promising technologies fail to advance.
UVU Bio’s Product Development and Innovation Unit is intentionally built to bridge this gap, by offering access to development facilities, technical expertise, and commercialisation support that help African biotech innovators move from promising concepts to scalable, real-world solutions.
The team also found that Rwanda is rapidly positioning itself as a competitive biotechnology hub, strengthened by strong government alignment and an increasing demand for Product Development services. These insights collectively validate what UVU Bio has observed on the ground which is that Africa urgently needs a product development partner that understands the science, but also the market forces and ecosystem dynamics shaping the continent’s bioeconomy.

Shaping UVU Bio’s Product Development and Innovation Unit
The Product Development and Innovation Unit at UVU Bio is advancing sustainable bio-based technologies that align with key bioeconomy drivers and national development goals in South Africa and across the broader African region.
The unit also serves as an important connector, bridging academia, startups, and industry to build a more cohesive biotech innovation ecosystem. Operating between Cape Town and Kigali, it is positioned to unlock regional strengths and accelerate impact.
“We are excited to announce our collaboration with Oath Africa, an innovative Agritech company with a presence in the United States of America and Rwanda. This partnership is particularly meaningful as it validates the research conducted by the diiVe team,” says Dr Nodumo.
This new business unit provides contract product development services, enabling innovators to move beyond proof-of-concept and into real-world development. Emerging solutions in alternative proteins, agro–processing, pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and renewable energy, will be provided with essential mentorship in product-market fit, scale-up strategies, and navigating regulatory pathways.
Through these efforts, UVU Bio aims to address critical environmental, health, and economic challenges while unlocking sustainable value from biological systems.
Cape Town and Kigali: Two Cities, One Vision
A key strength of the diiVe project was its comparative analysis of regional opportunities between South Africa and Rwanda, which reinforced the strategic value of UVU Bio’s dual-hub model. Cape Town offers a vibrant and mature biotech cluster, supported by strong university pipelines and established research networks. In contrast, Kigali is emerging as East Africa’s innovation nerve centre, driven by increasing demand for product development in pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and agroprocessing.
These cities create a powerful bi-regional foundation where talent, demand, and opportunity converge. This dual-hub strategy strengthens UVU Bio’s capacity to operate at the intersection of science, innovation, and market need, positioning UVU Bio as a key player in shaping Africa’s next wave of biotech advancement.
As UVU Bio expands its product development footprint across Cape Town and Kigali, the organisation remains focused on unlocking Africa’s scientific potential. The diiVe collaboration adds valuable perspective, but the work ahead requires sustained investment, regional alignment, and shared vision.
