Leading with Purpose: Two Women’s Impact on the future of Africa’s Bioeconomy

UVU Bio’s success is powered by a diverse and inclusive team.  We are taking a moment to shine the spotlight on Dr. Uraisha Magan and Dr. Nodumo Zulu whose inspiring leadership roles are driving Africa’s bioeconomy sector forward.

These two leaders are advancing science and innovation by building a stronger and more inclusive bioeconomy. Their combined wisdom serves as an inspiring roadmap for young women in STEM.

Building Careers and Opportunities

Dr Uraisha Magan leads the Skills Development unit at UVU Bio, an initiative developed in response to industry demand for specialised talent. Her journey began with a fascination for the microscopic world, which inspired her to pursue a BSc in Biochemistry and Microbiology, followed by Honours, a master’s degree and eventually a PhD. During her journey, she built hands-on industry expertise at South African Breweries, sharpened her research capabilities at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pretoria where she worked on veterinary vaccines.

Today, she applies this wealth of knowledge to equip young people with the hands-on training they need to bridge the gap between academia and industry. “We’re not just teaching lab skills,” she explains. “We’re building careers, creating opportunities and developing the next generation of scientists who can carry Africa’s bioeconomy forward.”

Her advice for young women entering science is that they should build their network, seek mentorship and surround themselves with people who are supportive.

Innovating for Impact

Dr Nodumo Zulu leads the Product Development and Innovation Unit, driving biotech-enabled products and integrating Indigenous Knowledge Systems into modern research.

Her journey started at CSIR as an in-service trainee and evolved through rigorous academic milestones, including a Marie Curie Scholarship to complete her PhD in Germany, followed by a position in an algal biotech company in Australia.

Today, her work is focused on empowering local industries and communities through research and product development. She is a firm believer in the power of mentorship and makes it a priority to guide young African researchers, to dream big and confidently pursue careers in STEM.

“Science is not a solo journey,” she reflects. “It’s built on collaboration, guidance and shared growth. I want young women to know that where you come from should never limit where you can go.”

Women Leading the Way in Science

Dr. Uraisha Magan and Dr. Nodumo Zulu are redefining what leadership in science looks like. Through their work at UVU Bio, they are building ecosystems where innovation thrives, collaboration is encouraged, and young scientists have the resources to succeed.

By mentoring emerging talent, advocating for diversity in science, and championing research that addresses Africa’s unique challenges, they are proving that progress requires knowledge and determination.

For young women pursuing STEM careers, their journeys are living proof that purpose-driven science can open doors to opportunity, impact, and lasting change.
