Africa’s young scientists hold immense potential, yet many see their ambitions paused by limited access to academic support and lab facilities. UVU Bio is changing this reality by providing flexible, hands-on, and holistic assistance that helps students complete their studies and grow with confidence. This impact shines through in the journeys of students like Nhlakanipho Zulu and Tania Tengile.
How access and mentorship shaped Nhlakanipho’s scientific journey

Nhlakanipho Zulu’s love for science began with a simple childhood experiment. When he was 12, he hid a slice of bread and later discovered it covered in mould. Instead of discarding it, he was fascinated, and that moment of curiosity sparked a lifelong dream of becoming a scientist.
After matriculating, he left Ulundi, a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, for the bustling city of Cape Town to study Biotechnology at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The move came with challenges, but his determination and passion for learning carried him forward.
During his third year, Nhlakanipho joined UVU Bio’s Skills Development Programme, which included a valuable internship placement. The opportunity arrived at a crucial time, as he needed access to a laboratory to complete his university project. UVU Bio became his trusted academic partner, by providing him access to a modern and well-equipped lab environment.
“Everything I needed was available. If I ran out of something, I was free to order it. My project was prioritised, and I had access to world-class facilities. That’s how I was able to graduate,” he explains.
With guidance from UVU Bio’s team, Nhlakanipho successfully completed his project, graduated, and gained early leadership experience. His dedication and eagerness to learn stood out, and he was appointed as an intern, supporting the next cohort of students.
Now pursuing his honours degree, Nhlakanipho continues to rely on UVU Bio as his academic partner. With continued access to facilities, equipment, and mentorship, he can focus on deepening his knowledge and advancing his career in biotechnology without the worry of limited resources.
Nhlakanipho’s journey reflects UVU Bio’s mission to ensure no aspiring scientist is left behind.
Tania’s Story: The power of timely intervention

For many young scientists, access to lab facilities is the bridge between ambition and achievement. For Tania, a biotechnology student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology this bridge almost collapsed.
With her university research project deadlines clashing with UVU Bio’s Introduction to Biotechnology and Bioprocessing Programme, she found herself running between sessions. Due to the demands of her training with UVU Bio, she couldn’t make it to the university’s labs before they closed. Faced with a difficult situation, Tania considered deregistering from the programme she had worked so hard to join.
Instead of giving up, she reached out to UVU Bio. She explained the overwhelming challenge of balancing her academic project and UVU Bio’s skills training. Rather than letting her walk away, the team at UVU Bio listened, understood, and offered a lifeline. She was given access to a lab so she could complete her research project while continuing her training. With this support, she was able to stay in the programme and finish her project successfully.
Her story reflects a wider issue in South Africa’s education landscape where talented students are often held back by lack of resources and access. Without UVU Bio’s intervention, she could have missed her chance to step into the biotechnology industry.
Tangible outcomes of UVU Bio’s impact
Nhlakanipho and Tania’s stories show that many talented students face structural barriers that can derail their scientific ambitions. UVU Bio bridges those gaps by offering infrastructure, guidance, and a community that enables them to thrive.
By removing structural barriers, young scientists are empowered to build careers, contribute to research innovation, and strengthen Africa’s growing bioeconomy.
When access meets ambition, potential becomes progress. UVU Bio invites partners, funders, and collaborators to join in building an ecosystem where every aspiring scientist has access to tools and mentorship to succeed. Africa’s scientific future depends on who gets the opportunity to experiment, explore, and innovate.
